CES 2017 Proves To Be A Success For Ascent Solar Technologies, Stock Symbol: ASTI

Every January in Las Vegas, Nevada, some of the biggest electronics companies, automobile manufacturers, and consumers gather from around the globe for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Since 1967, CES has been recognized as the largest technology convention, where consumers can experience the newest, hottest technologies and do one-on-one meetings with the vendors. For 50 years now, CES has been the launch pad for new innovation and technology that can change the world.

In the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center we had just finished viewing the booths of Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:ITNC)Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD)Nvidia Corporation(NASDAQ:NVDA), and GoPro Inc (NASDAQ:GPRO) when, after the crowd was shuffled to the South Hall, something caught my attention. Positioned at Booth 30459, next to Belkin International, Inc, are two brightly lit signs with a pedestal centerpiece. To the left, a life-sized mannequin clothed in hiking attire stands. Over the mannequin's shoulders hangs a backpack device adorned with what appears to be solar panels. The sophisticated props and bright orange lights catch our attention and we proceed over to the booth to learn more. Surrounding this brightly lit centerpiece are the various solar power products of the company EnerPlex, owned by public company Ascent Solar Technologies (OTCMKTS:ASTI). A representative, surrounded by two large light panels, was waiting at the front desk to answer any question we had.  The representative explained to us the various consumer, aerospace, and military applications for ASTI 's ultra-thin and flexible solar panels.

Nestled in the back left of the booth we found the Aerospace and Military exhibit.  Here, products such as the SilentFalcon™ drone, the COMMANDR 20™, and the GENERATR100™ are on display. We learned that with ASTI's solar panels integrated in the wings of drones and UAVs, that flight time can be increased by 30-50%. The paperwork explains that this offers an attractive trade-off over additional batteries built into the aircraft, which can add significant weight.  We were impressed to learn that ASTI's solar is engineered for optimal performance in subzero temperatures and minimal sunlight, making them the perfect fit for deep space exploration applications. SilentFalcon™ is a private company established to bring state-of-the-art technologies to unmanned aircraft systems. SilentFalcon™ was recently granted an airworthiness statement by NASA, joining the likes of aerospace companies such as Boeing (NYSE:BA) and Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT)

We then proceeded to the middle of the booth. Perched on top of the orange pedestals were ultra-thin battery pack devices. The representative explained to me how they work. The Jumpr™ Portable Solar Power Banks can fit inside a variety of bags and can power smartphones, tablets, and MP3 players. I was impressed with how thin and sturdy they were. Positioned highest, on the rear pedestal sat the crown jewel of the Enerplex lineup, the GENERATR1200™. The representative explained to us that the GENERATR1200™ is a 1231 watt-hour lithium ion solar battery, capable of powering and charging large electronics from smartphones and tablets to refrigerators and televisions. What makes the GENERATOR1200™ superior to other batteries is the fact that it's 60% lighter.

The most impressive technology we found in the booth was the Milpak™. The MilPak™ is a military grade potable power generation and storage system that can power devices and charge itself simultaneously. The Milpak™ was recently awarded an R&D 100 Award in 2015 for its ability to hold up in the roughest conditions and is available to government customers.

The International Consumer Electronics Show (International CES) showcases more than 3,800 exhibiting companies, and it attracts the world’s business leaders and pioneering thinkers. Since 1967, thousands of products have been announced at the yearly show, including many that have transformed our lives. In 1970, the video cassette player (VCR) was first introduced. The first camcorder and CD player were introduced at CES in 1981, the first DVD introduced in 1996, and the first tablets, netbooks, and android devices in 2010; all devices which spearheaded the current advancements that have shaped our media, entertainment and social interactions today.

Likewise, here in 2017, the most advanced lightweight flexible solar technology – having the ability to transform deep and near space travel, the proficiency of drones, military efficiencies, cross country logistics, and emergency aid and recovery – was presented at CES; showing great promise.  All of this, and one of Delotte’s 2016 “Fast 500” technologies companies (ASTI is a two time winner of R&D Magazine’s R&D 100 Award), still managed to create an entire suite of award winning consumer products which help individuals manage their own personal energy needs at every level.

What makes ASTI so unique to the entire solar industry it seems, is simply this... While you cannot put a Solar City panel on a drone, with ASTI, you certainly can. Where you cannot launch a Solar City panel on a mission to Mars or Jupiter, with ASTI, you can.  Everything from Military, to civilian use, ASTI’s flexible lightweight and virtually indestructible solar panels, seem to be what the solar market has been missing for decades. There is no question, this is truly innovation. And like the VCR, CD player, DVD and netbooks, ASTI could lead the way to energy sources for robots, medical devices and artificial intelligence.
